Packaging finishes explained: foil, emboss, soft-touch and spot UV

Finishes are how a plain printed box becomes something people want to touch. Each one has a look, a feel and a cost.

Hot foil

A thin metallic or coloured film is pressed onto the surface with heat. It is best on logos and fine lines.

Embossing and debossing

A die raises or sinks part of the surface. Combined with foil, it gives a strong sense of quality.

Soft-touch lamination

A velvety film that feels warm and matte. It shows fingerprints less than gloss but can scuff, so we test it for your handling.

Spot UV

• A glossy coating applied to selected areas.
• Works best on a matte or dark background.

Use one or two finishes well, rather than every finish at once.
